Character Name: Asuka Langley Soryu
Canon: Neon Genesis Evangelion
Character Background: Asuka was the child of a researcher for the Evangelion project; during the research on the EVA prototypes, her mother was rendered insane by the testing proceedings, a fact that never sat well with the little girl. Consistently ignored by her mother (who refused to believe she was the 'real Asuka') but too stubborn to stop going to visit her, she was subsequently the first person to find her mother's body after she had committed suicide.
Asuka's life became a whirlwind of events that reacted negatively with her: believing she had to be stronger than anyone else, Asuka refused to cry for her mother's funeral, internalizing all of her feelings. Her father quickly remarried, leading to an antagonistic relationship between the belligerent young girl and her stepmother, who refused to love her.
The girl took solace in the EVA project, which she was selected to pilot for -- with a remarkable synchronization with the unit EVA-02, Asuka showed incredible aptitude. During the events of the series of Evangelion, she and her EVA are transported to Japan, in order to assist in the defeat of the Angel forces. Quickly falling into the daily life of the series' protagonist, Shinji Ikari, she operates as a rival and a friend with conflicting romantic feelings for the boy as they both live and work together. Asuka is seen as a force to be reckoned with on the battlefield, instrumental in defeating many Angels, but ultimately her own stubbornness works against her when she loses a critical fight against the Angel Zeruel. Her synchronization with her EVA decreases as her own past, repressed actions catch up to her, rendering her emotionally unstable. Asuka is eventually rendered unable to pilot her EVA, which as the only thing she is proud of in her life is emotionally devastating. She is committed to the hospital after a mental breakdown, with overtures to suicidal tendencies rife throughout the flashbacks to her trauma.
During End of Evangelion, Asuka recovers her ability to pilot EVA-02 when she discovers that she does not simply wish to wait to die. Asuka dismantles several enemies as she fights to protect the world from reaching Third Impact (essentially - the destruction of humanity and earth in its entirety, to be reformed into a confluence of souls in one, destroying individual choice) but is overwhelmed when her EVA unit loses power. The ending of the series is unclear whether Asuka is living or dead -- brutally, mentally eviscerated by the replica EVAs she fought leading up to the Third Impact, the NERV headquarters believe she is dead. However, Shinji witnesses her alive and whole after the Third Impact.
Character personality:
An emotional hurricane, Asuka tends to project an air of complete confidence, often to the point of overbearing stubbornness. People who don't know her well are likely to see her as a bull-headed teenager: flirtatious and a bit spoiled, who enjoys getting things her way and schemes to ensure that this is so. Asuka enjoys flirting with older men, making friends and bullying people she views as weaker than her to some extent. She hates being teased by Shinji's friends, her ego rather large and incredibly fragile due to a large part of it being a facade. She is sociable when she wants to be and makes friends easily because of natural charisma and charm that she shows readily for friends. To people she likes less she is a terror of insults and sometimes physical violence. Above all, she is not shy about expressing her feelings on other people's behaviors -- she'll easily point out the flaws in someone else's personality, or tell them how their actions are wrong in many, many words.
When it comes to her own true emotions, however, Asuka has built up quite a significant wall around all negative things she doesn't wish other people to see. It is at the point where, in canon, she simply refuses to accept her own emotions as the truth. She conceals them from everyone, including herself -- Asuka deludes herself into thinking that the emotions do not exist. Incredibly lonely from a young age, she refuses to let herself appear weak -- part of the reason for her intense aggression towards other people and desire to be the best. Asuka will not let herself cry or accept loss -- if she loses to someone, she sees it as an opportunity to show that she can do ten times better a second time. If she can't prove that, she tends to completely dissemble; Asuka built her ego to keep people from seeing how devastatingly depressed and lonely she is. Once one block falls, she tends to crumble miserably. However, even the most depressed girl can stand back up again; as we see at the end of the series, Asuka is a fighter to the core, unwilling to sit and die while other people fight for her. She will go down in a blaze of glory, or not go down at all.
Effects of memory loss:
Without the intense emotional trauma that came from her childhood, I imagine that Asuka will be much more receptive of making friends and less likely to discourage or bully those she doesn't agree with. I see her as generally less aggressive overall. Careful memory regain planning will allow me to really develop her trust of her team and her friends, and I think although she will always be incredibly outgoing and belligerent, she will do it from a more natural place rather than from a facade! It will be interesting to see her interact with people without feeling like she naturally has to show how strong she is -- that's a very large motivation of the character in the show ("I'm not weak!" is quite a catchphrase for her) and so taking her away from that to a more healthy point to base her emotions off of seems like it will be incredibly beneficial in the long run for her emotional stability.
Personal area/item: HNNNG since an Eva is way too big... let's go with her activation clips for the EVA -- she normally wears them in her hair (but the canon point for the end of the series she doesn't).
Sample:
Introduce yourself:
Asuka Langley Soryu, thank you! You may know me as the pilot of EVA-02; if you don't then, where have you been? The EVA project is only the biggest thing in New Japan these days. Honestly, I'm surprised you could have had your head in a hole for that long.
What is one of your favorite things to do?:
Outside of piloting? Oh, I like plenty of things! Reading magazines, talking about boys, listening to music...really, this is the stupidest question. I like things that everyone likes, of course. I can't think of anything in particular that stands out really, except my EVA. But that's not exactly a hobby.
What is the most important thing that has happened to you in your life?:
[ The girl falls silent for a moment; eyes glance to the side, considering the question. With a nod - as if confirming something - she grins again, all confidence and smiles. ]
Getting selected to pilot, of course! Only the smartest and best get selected. I'm obviously both of those.
If you were the only person that could save your world, would you do it?:
As if I haven't tried to save the world time and again! Of course I would do it. It's not every day you have an entire world looking to you. I don't see why anyone would turn the offer down. If the world didn't exist, where would we be?
What aspects of yourself do you consider the most important?:
Do you have a favorite skill?:
Would you do anything to help the people or things that are most important to you?
Do you work well with other people? Please explain why you do, or why you do not!:
Finally, please say whatever you may be thinking at this moment in time!:
